Song Meter SM4BAT FS Ultrasonic Recorder

The Song Meter SM4BAT FS is a lightweight and compact, single channel, full-spectrum ultrasonic bat recorder. It can monitor unattended for hundreds of hours and collect thousands of bat calls on a single set of batteries and memory cards. The SM4BAT FS is particularly easy to operate, thanks to its intuitive built-in scheduling and self-checking features.

The Wildlife Acoustics Song Meter SM4BAT FS is a full-spectrum single channel bat detector and recorder. The unit will record a terabyte of triggered bat-call data in full-spectrum 16-bit WAV format at sampling rates up to 500 kHz. Full spectrum recording has the advantage of preserving all of the amplitude and harmonic structural information present in the original bat pass. WAV data files generated by the SM4BAT FS can be analysed with all popular full-spectrum analysis programs.

If your preference is to analyse your calls using zero crossing techniques - no problems. You can simply use the free Kaleidoscope software to non-destructively translate these WAV files to zero crossing format. This down-processing will actually result in a more robust data set than relying on native ZCA alone.

With a tough and weatherproof polycarbonate housing, the SM4BAT FS is designed for extended unattended operations in demanding conditions. The field-friendly housing is waterproof, lightweight, small and robust, yet provides rapid and easy access to batteries, memory cards and user controls.

Triggered recording capacity of up to 450 hours

The SM4BAT FS draws on advanced power circuitry to deliver very long run times. This efficiency, coupled with the unit's large data storage capacity, translates to potentially hundreds of hours of unattended bat call monitoring per deployment

Internal power is via a set of four commonly available D-Cells, either alkaline or NiMH rechargeable. Using a set of quality alkaline cells, the SM4BAT FS is capable of triggered full-spectrum recording for a remarkable 450 hours, depending on bat activity and other variables.

For even longer field programs, power your SM4BAT FS with the Faunatech SM3/SM4 Solar Power Module.

Capture more than a terabyte of ultrasonic data

The Song Meter SM4BAT FS employs advanced intelligent call triggering and active noise scrubbing techniques to maximize legitimate bat calls and reduce unwanted junk files writing to your memory cards.

The SM4BAT FS will accommodate one or two SDHC or SDXC memory cards, in capacities up to 512 GB each. Using two 512 GB SD cards will therefore achieve a terabyte of storage, sufficient for several months of high quality bat call data, schedule dependent. Note that 512 GB is the current maximum available SD card, however as larger memory cards become available, the SM4BAT FS Song Meter will be ready to exploit their extra capacity.

Note that the specific brand and model of your memory cards can greatly influence battery life - in fact, run times can vary by as much as 50% using certain cards. We recommend SanDisk brand SDHC/SDXC cards for your Song Meters.

Flexible and easy scheduling

The SM4BAT FS includes pre-programmed recording schedules to get you going with a minimum of fuss. These included pre-programmed schedules can also form the basis of customized schedules tailored to your exact specifications, using the free Configurator utility or by using the unit's keypad in the field.

Microphones

The SMM-U1 is a low-noise, highly sensitive omni-directional microphone able to record bat call frequencies of up to 250 kHz.

To increase the quality of ultrasonic recordings, SM4BAT recorders employ cabled microphones only. Simply connect the weatherproof SMM-U1 external microphone and cable to the watertight external microphone socket. Extension cables are available in 3, 10 and 50 metre lengths. These can be daisy-chained as required to give a maximum total lead length of 100 metres.

The SM3/SM4 Horn Attachment can be attached to the SMM-U1 to convert its omni-directional reception pattern to that of a highly directional microphone.
