The SM2+ is impressive in terms of high data capacity and long run times. This is not at the expense of data quality however, considering the stereo sampling rate of 96 kHz (SM2+) or 384 KHz (SM2BAT+) both at 16 bit resolution. To further enhance the quality of data, a number of programmable filters can be configured to reduce redundant information.
SM2+ offers great flexibility of scheduled programming. Record schedules can be very quick and simple, or as complex as you need for special projects. Programming is set via the PC based Configuration Utility then copied to any number of SM2+ units via SD card. Alternatively programming can be done directly on the SM2+ in the field. The system even knows when sunrise and sunset occurs on any day, so will adjust record schedules accordingly.
Microphone design is a key strength of the SM2+ package. Firstly they are omni-directional, thus enabling a vastly increased sampling volume while reducing the biasing of data. Secondly they are weatherproof, an important characteristic of any field device. Finally, the microphones can be attached either directly to the SM2+ housing, or each mic can be run on extension cables 100 metres distant. This allows effective comparative monitoring of adjacent habitats or other landscape features.
Song Meter features a built in temperature sensor and data logger, plus has facility for a range of external sensor types. For very long deployments, an external power source can run the Song Meter.
Two base versions are offered- the SM2+ Terrestrial Acoustic Package or the SM2BAT+ Terrestrial Ultrasonic Package. With the addition of an SMX-II audio mic, the latter can record audio plus 192 KHz ultrasonic (on left and right channel respectively), either simultaneously or at different times. If 384 KHz ultrasonic is selected, audio recording is still possible but not simultaneously with ultrasonic monitoring).
Subsequent captured calls can be analysed with optional Song Scope bio-analysis software using sophisticated patented digital signal processing algorithms. Jump to the Song Scope page.
