A classifier is a tool used to discriminate species or patterns from groups of recordings. Auto-ID for Bats is a pre-built classifier used to identify unknown bats, and Cluster Analysis allows a user to build custom classifiers based on their own recordings.
Classifiers are an example of algorithmic recognition, and like all algorithmic recognition systems, they are not perfect. They can help a researcher very quickly search through large amounts of data for important info, but a computer’s ability to recognise patterns such as animal vocalisations will rarely compete with an experienced human.
