Many species of birds migrate at night. The reasons for this are not entirely known, but some studies suggest that traveling at night minimises predation and that birds can more effectively use the earth’s magnetic field to navigate at night.
Some of these birds migrate in flocks and communicate amongst themselves using distinct vocalisations called nocturnal migration calls. These vocalisations differ from the bird’s diurnal songs and calls and can be used to identify the species of bird. Using a passive recorder to collect recordings at night is an inexpensive and easy method for monitoring bird migration.
