Adapter Overview
If the USB socket on your Android or iOS phone or tablet does not match the USB plug on your EMT 2 module, you will need a USB adapter that converts one physical format to the other and is designed for USB on-the-go (OTG) compatibility. USB OTG support means the adapter is wired to allow your phone or tablet to act as the host to an external peripheral like the EMT 2 module. The vast majority of commonly available adapters are designed for your phone to act as the peripheral to a computer, which acts as the host. A USB adapter will not work with the EMT module unless it is designed for USB OTG use.
Adapting from Micro-USB module to USB-C port
If you need to connect a Micro-USB-equipped EMT 2 module with a USB-C-equipped phone or tablet, you will need an adapter with a Micro-USB socket and a USB-C plug, also referred to as “Micro-USB female, USB-C male.” The adapter's description needs to specify OTG compatibility.
At this time, we have found adapters that work from the following brands on the US Amazon store:
- Arktek
- Fanisy
- Tronsmart
- CnC Tech
- Weduda
- UGREEN
This list is not exhaustive, these are just adapters we have tried. Any adapter that is OTG compatible should work.
Adapting from USB-C module to Micro-USB port
If you need to connect a USB-C-equipped EMT 2 module with a Micro-USB-equipped phone or tablet, you will need an adapter with a USB-C socket and a Micro-USB plug, also referred to as “USB-C female, Micro-USB male.” The adapter needs to be explicitly labeled as supporting OTG.
So far, we have only found one such adapter on Amazon US, produced by Duttek. We have tested this adapter and confirmed that it works.
USB Extensions Stubs
If you have a phone or tablet with a case that interferes with the Echo Meter Touch, then you need a USB-C or micro-USB extension stub. All brands we have tested work, though we have had occasional reports of ones that don't so you will have to test after purchase. Extension stubs usually do not claim OTG compatibility and it is not necessary for an extension.
USB Extension Cables
An extension cable can be used to mount the Echo Meter Touch module away from your mobile device. If your device has a micro-USB connector, then you need a micro-USB extension cable (female micro-USB to male micro-USB). If your device has a USB-C connector, then you need a USB-C extension cable (female USB-C to male USB-C).
Most USB-C extension cable brands we have tested work fine. Look for a cable that specifies that it is designed to transfer data and not just power.
We have had less success with micro-USB extension cables. About half of those we have tested work and half don’t, and even the ones that do work don’t usually mention data transfer. You will need to purchase and test to be sure.
Extension cables do not require OTG compatibility.
