Since our founding in 2003, Wildlife Acoustics has always been about developing bioacoustics tools that propel scientific discovery and conservation. After listening to your needs and challenges, we introduced the Song Meter SM1 in 2007—the first commercially available acoustic recorder designed specifically for fieldwork. Biologists now had an all-in-one, weatherproof solution to monitor wildlife and soundscapes passively.
At the time, the SM1 was a game-changer, presenting a convenient, cost-effective tool for monitoring birds, frogs, and other audible wildlife. Of course, we've come a long way since then, with many iterations of Song Meter recorders. Still, the SM1 marked a significant milestone in the industry's evolution, with bioacoustics gaining popularity because it allowed scientists to gather data at scale, affordably.
We're so glad the market has expanded in the years since, and bioacoustics is becoming even more accessible for critical research. With the acceleration of climate change and illicit activities like poaching and deforestation depleting biodiversity—and with rapidly evolving advancements in machine learning—now more than ever, biologists need access to acoustic recorders they can deploy at scale.
Our commitment to the accessibility and affordability of bioacoustics tools is unwavering, which is why we have decided to drop the price of our Song Meter Micro 2 from $249 to $149 USD. Though it has always been our lowest-priced recorder, we realized we could do better at making acoustic monitoring technology and tools accessible, and operational efficiencies and improvements in supply chains have allowed us to do this now. Bioacoustics arose because it is affordable and approachable, and the new pricing of the Micro 2 carries on in that spirit and the spirit of the evolving space.
In addition to the Micro 2 price drop, we're happy to announce we are expanding our product grant program at the start of 2025. More details to follow later this year!
Through these combined efforts, we hope to continue to make bioacoustics—and the insights and impact it makes possible—accessible for professional biologists, early career researchers, and future conservationists.
With gratitude,
