Without a phone or tablet connected via Bluetooth, the Micro can display very basic information about the state of its SD card and whether it is able to run its recording schedule, but a smart phone or tablet with the Song Meter Configurator app is required for almost all functions. The app is compatible with Android and iOS devices supporting Bluetooth version 4.0 or later. During the deployment, a phone or tablet can be used to check the status of the Mini from up to 20 meters away.

Before deploying the recorder for the first time, you must update the SM Micro’s internal clock by pairing the recorder with the app. When you change the batteries, or if the batteries die, a rechargeable internal battery will keep the SM Micro’s clock running for a few minutes until the AA batteries are replaced. If the AA batteries and clock battery die, you will need to pair with the recorder again to reset the clock before you can continue recording.
